The tree ornament for Christmas can range from the glass bauble to beautiful angels and gay streamers. A tree ornament collection in a family grows over the years. Some are commercially bought and yet others are made by the family members themselves.

The first Christmas tree had a tree ornament of apples and chains of popcorn and baked stars and other shapes. Hans Griener of Germany made the first glass bauble tree ornament and since then baubles of many designs and colors have been used as a tree ornament.

A tree ornament is not limited to glass baubles although they are so pretty. There are other types of the tree ornament that could be hung on different branches of the tree. There is a tree ornament of angels in different poses, reindeer, and snowmen. In modern times there is also the tree ornament in the shape of frogs and cows, penguins and even pigs beautifully decorated in Christmas costumes.

Candy canes are another regular tree ornament. Garlands of lights light up the tree at night giving it a beautiful appearance. The all important tree ornament is the fairy or angel placed right on top of the tree. The beauty of this tree ornament is what brings out the beauty of the whole tree.

The tradition of decorating the tree has many traditions. The tree ornaments collected over the years in a home are used, including those that have come down generations, no matter how ugly, are hung with utmost reverence. In the commercial world trees are decorated in department stores and hotels according to a theme. Some countries have beautifully decorated national trees like the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Centre in America or Trafalgar Square in London.

Outdoor Christmas trees are also very beautifully decorated. Although absent with tree ornament, garlands of light beautifully arranged add a lot of sparkle. There are some who decorate trees for birds and animals. It is not irregular to see trees decorated with a tree ornament made up of garlands of pop corn, berries and seed covered delicacies.

Young children look forward to Christmas Day where they believe that Santa has left them plenty of fantastic gifts under the Christmas tree festooned with beautiful tree ornaments.
